Biopori Hole at Home, Why Not?

The rainy season has come to Indonesia. We often find a water puddle in the yard after the heavy rain. This is not only might cause a slippery but also can be the beginning of a source of dangerous diseases such as dengue.

Then, is there any simple way to increase water absorption and eliminate water puddles around the house when heavy rain will often hit your area in rainy seasons? The answer is yes. Some of you have heard biopori, but you may not understand what is that. The workings of biopori are actually very simple. A collection of organic waste in your home can be disposed of in soil holes to produce compost. This is what then feeds the soil fauna. Soil fauna such as worms can create pores in the soil and the soil will easily to absorb the water and eliminate your water puddle problem. This is also create your water storage in hot season.

The biopori hole is a cylindrical hole made vertically inward which was first invented by Dr. Kamir Raziudin Brata from IPB as a water catchment area. This is a method that was originally created to be useful for healthy trees and other plants. Over time the benefits were even greater. Including water absorption so as to reduce the risk of flooding, soil health and handling of organic waste by making lumbang a container for composting organic waste at home.

So now you know how importance of the biopori. Well, there’s nothing wrong if you create your own biopori area at home. Then, what exactly is needed to create a biopori hole at home?

Please note this. First thing first, you need a ground drill and PVC pipe are two things most needed to make a biopori hole. But you also need a sort of lid to cover the biopori hole. After the equipment is complete, do the following steps:

1.  Determine the location for making a biopori hole at home.
2. To facilitate the manufacture by softening the soil, flush water in the area where the biopore is made.
3.  Lubricate the ground perpendicular to the ground drill
4. Make a hole about 1 meter deep with a diameter of about 30 cm. The width of the diameter can be adjusted to the diameter of the PVC pipe
5.  Insert the PVC pipe
6.  Fill holes with organic waste such as kitchen scraps, leaves, grass or fruit peels.
7.  After that close the hole with iron wire
